Bacardi: Environmentally Sustainabie from the Start
For Bacardi, environmental sustainability is good business – an approach that dates back to the very beginning of the Company more than 150 years ago. Bacardi founder, Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, opened his first distillery on February 4, 1862, in Santiago de Cuba.
When building his business, he utilized the Spanish government’s challenge to reduce surplus amounts of molasses in Cuba, leading to the crafting of BACARDÍ rum. Repurposing old whisky barrels to age his rum was also part of the founder’s original plan, a practice still in use today. Bacardi continues to be an industry leader in environmental performance in their operations. Key potential areas of impact include:
Water use: fresh water is fundamental to Bacardi’s business and the importance of water conservation is recognized.
Climate change: the fossil fuels that are consumed in Bacardi’s value chain process: operating the facilities, manufacturing the products, and transporting them to customers, create greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.
Waste: effluents and waste from operations need to be kept to a minimum as well as the use of the materials in bottling and packaging to reduce the overall impact on the environment.

In FY 14, Bacardi launched an ambitious environmental initiative called Good Spirited with specific goals in sourcing, packaging and operations by 2022. The initiative covers more than 160 markets, including 75 offices and 29 manufacturing and bottling facilities, touching every employee. Within Operations, we have focused on energy, greenhouse gas emissions, water and waste. This complements the efforts in our Responsible Sourcing pillar and their focus of sourcing and packaging.
Bacardi Limited has achieved its first "Good Spirited" goal more than a year ahead of target!
Bacardi reduced its greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 50%. This achievement is the equivalent of removing 15,000 cars from the road each year, reducing the amount of oil consumed by 165,000 barrels, or installing 18 wind turbines.
As part of its Good Spirited: Building a Sustainable Future environmental sustainability initiative, Bacardi will continue to focus on its zero-net impact vision to return to the environment at least as much as it takes away across three vital areas of Responsible Sourcing, Global Packaging and Operational Efficiencies.
Bacardi Global Brands Sustainability Update
From one end of the world to another, BACARDÍ rum holds both its operations and suppliers to high sustainability standards. Globally, BACARDÍ rum facilities strive to reach zero solid waste. At BACARDÍ rum production sites globally, leftover packaging materials, including plastic, paper, glass, aluminum and cardboard, are sorted and collected for recycling.
A redesign of the original MARTINI Asti bottle produced a more streamlined version weighing close to two ounces less with no visible difference in bottle shape. By reducing the glass weight, MARTINI reduces the energy required to make the bottles. The annual energy savings from this lighter-weight glass is equivalent to taking 330 cars off the road.
The iconic gin brand merges history, heritage and architectural beauty with environmentally friendly technology and materials in its BOMBAY SAPPHIRE Distillery at Laverstoke Mill. The state-of-the-art distillery and brand visitor center in England was awarded the prestigious 2014 Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology Industrial Award, the world's foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings, for its design.
Across the John Dewar & Sons distillation and production facilities there are robust recycling efforts, state-of-the-art blending centers, sophisticated water filtration, fuel-efficient transportation and landscaping that enhance the natural habitat.
